The core of the greatness of this museum is due largely to the bequests of female collectors, Claribel and Etta Cone and Saidie May, and to a series of strong female directors, especially Adelyn Breeskin and most recently Doreen Bolger and Deputy Director and Chief Curator Brenda Richardson. To state that the museum needs to make amends to women, as the new director Christopher Bedford claims, and therefore to exhibit only female artists and to purchase only works by women for the entire next year sounds like an attention-seeking gimmick that is not worthy of this monumentally important museum.
