Following advice from Sir Nevile Henderson, British ambassador to Germany, the England team were ordered to give the Nazi heil-Hitler salute before the kick-off. 'When I go to see Herr Hitler,' said Henderson, 'I give him the Nazi salute, because that is the normal courtesy expected.' Cullis, sensing that war was just around the corner, would have none of it. 'Count me out,' he said.
They did. They dropped one of their greatest players from the England team.
