Часть идет на корм скоту, часть на экспорт, часть на сироп. Все равно остается дофига, людям столько не нужно. На еду уходит совсем немного.
Кукурузу в чистом виде вообще жрать нельзя и бессмысленно.
Потому и перегоняют в спирт, чтоб все крутилось - это же побочка от производства сиропа. Экспорт нестабилен и потребление небось тоже. А технологии выращивания подтягиваются - и все эффективней, а технология переработки довольно сложна, это уже специально заточенные заводы, и им нужна загрузка.
В свою очередь сахар традиционно жестко квотируется и ограничивается в штатах. Отсюда потребность в сиропе как замене.
Сейчас небось рынок кормов просел из за снижения птиц (пишут что грипп их косит) и выращивания скота - девать кукурузу куда то надо.
Еще из кукурузы налаживались делать пенопласт упаковочный. вот все эти разноцветные foam beans.
Вероятно, сокращать выращивание не хотят, из каких то соображений или лоббизма.
PS спирт делать научились отлично - киркланд водка, в костке, по 12 с чем то за большую бутыль, это оно, кукурузное white whiskey. Причем где то в калифорнии гонят. Наилучший продукт из доступных, надо заметить.

Искусственное увеличение спроса лишь подстегнет этот процесс.
Не говоря уже о том, что сжигать еду во-первых, аморально, а во-вторых - чистый идиотизм, так как производство этанола энергетически невыгодно.
Кстати, фермеры сейчас переходят на сою, потому что кукуруза требует больше удобрений, которые тоже жутко подорожали. То есть, цена и так будет только расти...

Про выгоду сложно - судя по всему им таки выгодно, RFS требование закона. Нам, водителям - невыгодно да, mileage меньше.
Еще пишут что перегон на спирт повышает стоимость кукурузы на 20-30 процентов - или 10-15 процентов по разным данным.

Пока я для себя решил, что лучший вариант - запретить произвольный отказ в оказании услуг вообще. Это, конечно, ущемит частную собственность, но по-моему, это лучший вариант, чем оказаться в ситуации, когда большинство будут ничем не владеть и не будет иметь возможность чем-то владеть.
