A white guy named Michael couldn’t get his poem published. Then he became Yi-Fen Chou.
Of course, the same poem that was rejected 40 times under Michael, becomes "Best American Poetry" under Yi-Fen Chou.
Натурально, всё прогрессивное человечество возмущено. Нет, не тем, что одна и та же поэма - мусор от имени Майкла и лучшая поэзия Америки от имени Йи-Фен Чу. А тем, что привилегированый класс позволил себе такую нечестную выходку:
And it diminishes categorically all of our accomplishments. He sort of implies that minorities are published because we’re minorities, not because of our work. That’s just insulting because it strips everything we’ve worked so hard for.
И это чистая правда - это действительно подрывает всё, над чем они так тяжело работали, и действительно вызывает подозрения. Правда, подозрения как раз и являются прямым следствием того, над чем они работали, потому что они работали как раз над суждением по принципу принадлежности к группе, а не по личным заслугам. И их гнев обусловлен тем, что привилегия досталась тому, кому она была не положена.
Но народ уже начал просекать это дело, и в дальнейшем таких случаев станет всё больше и больше, я думаю.
P.S. отличная фраза: If someone is fraudulently pretending they’re someone else to benefit from a system that traditionally benefits them, that is not ethical.

because white people have been and still are the beneficiaries of a long line of racist systems going back to slavery. We get these benefits simply because we are white. It may be hidden if you aren't used to it, so you likely won't see this unless you actively look for it.

Such usage of the term 'white people' is misleading, confusing and racist -- even if we consider only USA there are many white-skin people who are not given power and not all those who are given power are whites. Such term is not better than say using term 'black people' to denote criminals or term 'muslim people' to denote terrorists or term 'afroamerican families' to denote single-parent families. I believe you would not endorse using such terms for such meanings. Why do you use the term 'white people' ? I realize that it was not you who invented this term and it is used in some groups. However you could refuse using it and write simply and clearly 'ones given power and privilege' instead 'white people'. Why didn't you do it, what was your purpose ? To incite racial hatred ? To push not guilty people to pay the price for some others ?

The reason why the term 'ones who are given power and privilege' is not used is because the psychological response of the listener is to exclude himself from that category. Thus it becomes always someone else's problem. The term 'white people' takes the listener out of his comfort zone, thus starting the process of the listener to consider how he is contributing to the problem.

А вообще-то его псевдоним похож на "фенг шуй" :)

Тут-то вообще первые 2 игнорируются, а последнее вкладывается читателем в зависимости от его представлений о бэкграунде автора. Вот и вышло.
