Вот ещё офигенная история.
Американцы собрали номера кредиток, которые использовались на сайтах, где была пoрнуха с малолетками. Ну то есть на самом деле заполучили базу данных провайдера, который заведовал проводкой платежей для этих сайтов. И поделились информацией с англичанами.
Англичане тут же, недолго думая, арестовали владельцев карт, отобрали у них детей, у кого были, и т.п. Многие имена, конечно, слили в прессу, как без этого. Потом, конечно, оказалось то, о чём вы уже и сами подумали - номер карты можно украсть, та же фирма-посредник предоставляла услуги проводки платежей сайтам со вполне легальным контентом, и данные лежали в общей базе, и т.п.
The British police failed to provide this information to the defendants, and in some cases implied that they had checked and found no evidence of credit card fraud when no such check had been done. Because of the nature of the charges, children were removed from homes immediately. In the two years it took the police to determine that thousands had been falsely accused, over 100 children had been removed from their homes and denied any unsupervised time with their fathers. The arrests also led to an estimated 33 suicides by 2007.
Та самая фирма, чьей базой воспользовались, обанкротилась из-за того, что слишком много транзакций были по ворованным картам:
Landslide went out of business in August 1999, as the fraudulent charges passed the 1% ceiling, leading to Superior Credit withdrawing its merchant services on August 10. Without this merchant account Landslide could not charge credit cards and could no longer fulfill the primary function of the business. Reportedly, the biggest source of fraud at that time was coming through websites run by US law enforcement as part of a sting operation.
