In March 2000 Smith & Wesson was the only major gun manufacturer to sign an agreement with the Clinton Administration. The company agreed to numerous safety and design standards as well as limits on the sale and distribution of its products. Gun clubs and gun rights groups responded to this agreement by initiating large-scale boycotts of Smith & Wesson by refusing to buy their new products and flooding the firearms market with used S&W guns. After a 40% sales slide, the sales impact from the boycotts led Smith & Wesson to suspend manufacturing at two plants.

This agreement signed by Tomkins PLC ended with the sale of Smith & Wesson to the Saf-T-Hammer Corporation. The new company (Smith and Wesson Holding Corporation), which publicly renounced the agreement, was received positively by the firearms community.

On 11 May 2001, Saf-T-Hammer Corporation acquired Smith & Wesson Corp. from Tomkins PLC for US$15 million, a fraction of the US$112 million originally paid by Tomkins. Saf-T-Hammer assumed US$30 million in debt, bringing the total purchase price to US$45 million.

Меня вот тут спросили - а почему кого-то расследовали, если никакого преступления вроде не было?
Это хороший вопрос. В ответ - вот история.

У Катерины Энгельбрехт всё было хорошо, пока она не решила в 2010-м году поучаствовать в деятельности Чайной Партии и даже попытаться создать собственный нонпрофит, . После чего она удостоилась расследований от FBI, IRS (2 аудита - личный и компании, плюс обычный бурный поток опросников и трёхлетняя задержка получения статуса нонпрофита - с этой темой мы уже знакомы), BATF (2 аудита), OSHA (аудит и штраф в 25К), Texas Commission on Environmental Quality и линое расследование от конгрессмена Каммингса. Преступление? Попытка убедиться, что находящиеся в списка избирателей - действительно избиратели.

Впрочем, если вы думаете, что это единственный способ вести расследования, то вот другой пример:

A top development company donated $100,000 to Gov. Cuomo just days before he signed a bill that quietly showered the firm with lucrative tax breaks.
Two corporations tied to Extell Development each contributed $50,000 to Cuomo’s campaign, which recorded the checks on Jan. 28 — the same day the Assembly passed a housing bill that contained tax breaks for five developers, including Extell, records show.
Cuomo signed the legislation two days later.

Тут более-мене ясно, какое преступление подозревается. И расследование не замедлило:

Extell and the other four companies who benefited from the legislation have been subpoenaed by a special commission created by Cuomo to investigate corruption in state government.
