Shabtai: Can I clarify something earlier, you said the height and weight in DPRK is similar to that of other Asian countries, did I hear you right?

Dr Chan: I said what I saw in Pangung might not be representative for the entire country, but that is what I saw in the capital. Of course, one thing I recognized is that walking is quite well observed in that country, and I suggest that is why I didn't see many obese people. And if you look at me I am also an Asian, I am pretty short but Asian standards, so when I compare to most of the people I saw on the street, I can only make a very broad comparison. But mind you, as I said, now in Asian countries, because of affluence and intake of food we are seeing obesity which I don't see in DPRK.

And there are obviously nutritional problems in DPRK, so is the obesity and size issue connected to a serious nutrition problem in the country and a serious lack of good food for the people.

Dr Chan: Of course there is no denying that, as I said, I have not looked at the study you refer to but the government does accept that they have gone through some very difficult years with flooding and drought and natural disaster, so malnutrition is a problem but things have improved in recent years.

С другой стороны, она, конечно, по чисто протокольным соображениям не может себе позволить после визита в страну говорить что-то обидное для страны. Ведь для нее в данном случае приоритетом является поддержание отношений с правительством Северной Кореи. Сказать горькую правду легко, но после этого и работать в стране будет трудно или даже невозможно.

Я понимаю, что открыто критиковать может быть трудно в её позиции, но необязательно же превращаться в клоуна. В конце концов, если бы она ограничилась последней фразой со стандартной формулой про временные трудности, всё было бы ясно. А её речь создаёт впечатление, что её писали прямо в отделе пропаганды СК.

Я бы предположил, что она просто хотела сказать что-то приятное для северокорейцев, ну и ляпнула не подумавши, с джетлагу. Сейчас, наверно, локти кусает - мол, блин, зачем же я про недостаток толстых-то заговорила, каким местом сама думала?

Ведь даже с точки зрения отдела пропаганды СК это очевидный прокол. Это же живая пресс-конференция, и ляпы про толстых-тонких сами провоцируют журналистов на задавание неприятных вопросов с разъяснениями и справками. Не скажи она этой глупости - все прошло бы намного глаже.

Я как бы могу еще с натяжкой поверить что для европейца все азиаты на одно лицо, но она-то не может не знать, что разница в росте между разными азиатскими странами - сантиметров 10, кореец такого же роста, как средний южный китаец недотягивает сантиметров 5-8
