Внезапное открытие:

Only 12 percent of black fourth-grade boys are proficient in reading, compared with 38 percent of white boys, and only 12 percent of black eighth-grade boys are proficient in math, compared with 44 percent of white boys.

Poverty alone does not seem to explain the differences: poor white boys do just as well as African-American boys who do not live in poverty, measured by whether they qualify for subsidized school lunches.

А действительно, почему? Только без расизма.

Id like to offer my perspective as someone who has been constantly surrounded by this "acting white" environment he talks about. I am Black and come from a very ghetto neighborhood in Houston. My life has been FILLED with constant badgering and belittlement by black peers in my family because I took a different approach in my life. School, my grades, and getting honor roll was not something my mom was interested in and when I would receive praises in grade school, the only person excited would be my teacher. This continued into my undergrad and even graduate school today.

Since I am a bigger guy, my family was DISAPPOINTED that I did not play football, and thought it was a waste that I was involved in my school's Academic Decathlon. I graduated #15 in my class of over 1000, and I barely received any gifts, recognition, or parties like my white and asian friends. It is hard to be someone successful in academics when you are black, not because the man is putting you down, or because black people are just dumb -- it's because Parents don't teach their kids the benefits and enrichment education can bring to one's life. Instead they themselves say things like "why you trying to act white" or "you think you better than us".. ostracizing you from the people that you should feel the closest.

It took for a very passionate counselor and english teacher to give me motivation to continue and not worry about the other black students, who would REPEATEDLY called me a "sell out" -- as I was the only black student in some of the advanced placement courses. I would be laughed at as if I were the one flunking and lacking a future. It is seriously insane. Anyway, I have moved forward in my life and will be receiving my Master's in Electrical Eng this Spring.

I have learned in college that most of my black friends went through a similar situation with their peers regardless of their social status. This shit seriously needs to stop, not just for the betterment of black people, but for our society as a whole.
