Я, разумеется, не говорю, что Президент США обязан знать гимн и законы своей страны. В общем, конечно, совершенно необязательно. Но как к выдающемуся интеллектуалу современности, блестящему оратору и великому лидеру, к Обаме, наверно, можно применить немного более высокие критерии? Или нет?

Девизов может быть хоть сотня, но вот беда - официальный национальный девиз из них только один. Такая беда случилась ещё в 1956 году, что полуграмотные ксенофобы, clinging to their religion and their guns, это записали в законах США. Если великому человеку это не нравилось, он мог попросить Пелози и Рида это поправить. Но пока не поправил - его никто за язык не тянул говорить "national motto", да?

В законе о гербе США (наверняка такой найдется) о "E pluribus..." тоже что-то вроде "national motto" написано.

Тут была бы уместна цитата. Я цитату привёл, а вы?

Надо обладать очень разитым воображением, чтобы найти во фразе "“In God we trust” is the national motto" учреждение религии. Или какие-нибудь другие части поправки нарушены?
