A paper by Kris Gerardi of the Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta, Lorenz Goette of the University of Geneva and Stephan Meier of Columbia University asked a battery of simple financial literacy questions of recent homebuyers. Many of the respondents could not correctly answer even simple questions, like this one: What will a $300 item cost after it goes on a “50 percent off” sale? (The answer is $150.)

То, что я выделил в скобках - наглядно демонстрирует, что Таймс знает, с кем имеет дело - очевидно, их основной контингент вряд ли сможет поделить 300 на 2 без подсказки.

SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) -- California will not pay tax refunds for individuals and business that overpaid 2008 taxes, in order to conserve dwindling cash for priority payments including school spending and debt repayment required by state law, the state's controller office said Friday.

Журнал Экономист продолжает учить нас - ну и Любимого Руководителя, конечно - как помирить евреев с арабами. Вот, например, что он говорит о Хамасе:

The right mixture of pressure and inducements, including an end to
Gaza’s economic blockade, might well tempt Hamas back into a unity
government, not least because it stands a fair chance of controlling
such a government when next there are elections in both Gaza and the
West Bank.
Would it be a disaster if Hamas won? Only if it stood by its
rejectionist creed. Yet Fatah too once called for the destruction of
Israel, and changed its mind. Hamas even now sends out enough hints of
pragmatism to make it worth seeing whether it can be induced to
undertake a similar ideological journey. But—and here is the other
immediate job for the peacemakers—Hamas will not be induced to
compromise unless the prospect of a Palestinian state begins to look
real.

Иными словами, inducement налицо - но где же pressure? Никакой pressure пока не видно, одни надежды (Hope and Change!), что если Хамасу пообещать достаточно много, то они подобреют. Причем даже автор статьи не решается заявить, что Хамас изменился - даже его целевая аудитория не готова пока поверить в такое - но он уже видит намеки! Как Ходжа Насреддин, толкующий шевеление ушами и махание головой осла в якобы слова прекрасного принца, в этого осла обращенного.
Но читаем дальше:

To that end, Mr Obama needs to make it clear, preferably before
Israel’s election next month, that America will no longer countenance
Israel’s colonisation of the West Bank. The Jewish settlements there
should never have been built, and Israel has promised to freeze them.
This has become a test. If Mr Obama cannot hold Israel to its promise,
his chances of restoring America’s standing as the indispensable
mediator in this conflict are nil.

Вот вам и pressure. Т.е. Экономист советует - Израиль давить, Хамас поощрять. Тогда, разумеется, Хамас поймет, что раньше они поступали неправильно - именно на эту мысль должна их навести  предполагаемая победа на выборах, предлагаемые поблажки и предлагаемое давление на Израиль - и тут же перекуется.

Мне только одно непонятно - у меня в комментах тут кто-то высказывал мысль, что Экономист, дескать, "делает вид, что соблюдает нейтральность". Признайтесь, товарищ, вы хотели меня разыграть?

President Obama warned Republicans on Capitol Hill today that they need to quit listening to radio king Rush Limbaugh if they want to get along with Democrats and the new administration.

Интересно, Буш когда-нибудь рекомендовал демократам перестать читать Нью-Йорк Таймс и слушать NPR?

Но вообще Раш Лимбо, по-видимому, очень крут, если президент находит нужным публично с ним ругаться. Я, признаться, его не слушал ни разу - может, надо начать?
