Well, I personally would want from a politican to announce his position and accept the public judgement based on it. When the politican says "I vote for war, because of this and that reason" - you can weight the reasons and say if you agree or disagree. But if the politician says "I vote for war, but in fact I'm against the war, I want to achieve the war objectives, but I don't approve the war, but I would go to the war, but it is wrong to go to the war" - I can just raise my eyebrows in astonishment and mutter "what the fuck this guy means?" That's not just political disagreement - that's much deeper problem. As for having president they deserve - well, any people have president they deserve, more or less. If they vote for a man knowing no better than to base his campaign on events of 30 years ago and then have his campaign almost derailed by a tiny group of then-comrades in arms - then maybe they indeed deserve nothing better. The problem is that there a lot of people who deserve much better but would have to suffer too.
