Т.е. что-то вроде "Мы стоим на краю пропасти, и вот-вот сделаем большой шаг вперед, всем мало не покажется".

Я на всякий случай проверил по словарю:
precipice, n.
1. An overhanging or extremely steep mass of rock, such as a crag or the face of a cliff.
2. The brink of a dangerous or disastrous situation: on the precipice of defeat.

precipice: сущ.
1) обрыв, пропасть
to stand on the brink of a precipice — стоять на краю пропасти
2) опасное положение

Я в курсе. Только там еще продолжение есть - and neither do we - we must never stop thinking about how best to defend our country.
T.e. our enemies never stop thinking about X - and in the same way, we must never stop thinking about Y.
А вот у Обамы продолжение такое:
