Yet even with a department so bloated that it has a horseshoer and no horses, the local union president said it is "not possible" to eliminate positions.
Но это ещё ничего - по крайней мере, этот кузнец может подковать... ну я не знаю, трубу какую-нибудь. А как вам вот такое:

Мужика судят за взятки, но он продолжит получать зарплату в почти $200К за время отсидки. Ну потому что тюремное заключение - не помеха для госслужащего. В тюрьме, наверное, от него и вреда поменьше, за те же деньги. Я вообще думаю, что если бы был вариант некоторых госслужащих закатать в каталажку, пусть даже и с сохранением оклада, то это был бы неплохой вариант. По крайней мере, не навредят.
Впрочем, и безработные не оставлены заботой:
A convicted killer who got caught because he'd tattooed a graphic mural of the murder scene on his chest raked in more than $30,000 in unemployment benefits while he sat in the Los Angeles County jail system, a sheriff's spokesman said.
Не всем, конечно, так везёт, даже на госслужбе. Для сравнения, вот чем закончилось попадание в тюрьму за самозащиту для одного жителя Айовы:

В России, насколько я понимаю, посадили бы - законы о самообороне там хорошие, но практическое правоприменение такое что сажают.
